在1937年對日抗戰爆發之前，中國大陸有非常活躍的業餘攝影團體及攝影創作活動。而當時在日本統治之下的臺灣業餘攝影者雖然沒有正式組織，但也有個別的活動，但是這樣的局面在1949年國民黨政府撤退到臺灣後有巨大的轉變。1953年由大陸來臺的攝影界人士將上海的中國攝影學會在臺復會，從此主導臺灣攝影活動的發展。1963年以臺籍人士為主的臺灣省攝影學會成立後雖然與中國攝影學會有競爭的關係，但是毫無當時政治的肅殺氣氛。這些政治上、地理上及省籍上的差別在追求「攝影之樂」的共同目標下，實際上在業餘攝影團體與攝影者之間並沒有後人想象中那麼大的影響。

Chinese amateur photographers were very active before the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. In the mean time, amateur or creative photography was also germinating in the Japanese occupied Taiwan. After 1949, amateur photographers from mainland China reestablished the Chinese Photographic Society with local photographers and dominated photographic activities. The photographic society of Taiwan founded in 1963 was considered main competitor of the Chinese Photographic Society. It had membership based mostly on native Taiwanese photographers. However, the competition between these societies was not as fierce as political scenes. The geographical, political and ethnic differences among these amateur photographers were obscured by the pursuit of "the pleasure of photography."
