In Search of a Free Time: Street Scenes and Daily Life in the Paintings of Chang Yi-hsiung

Abstract

Over nearly a century of creative life, famous Taiwanese artist Chang Yi-hsiung has produced a considerable body of work across various subjects and genres, including portraiture, landscape, still life painting, as well as non-representational painting. His achievements and unique style have earned him a very prominent place in the art history of Taiwan.

Chang Yi-hsiung was born in 1914 in the southern Taiwan town of Chiayi, and moved to Japan in 1964 before fulfilling his dream of settling in Paris in 1980. Although Chang may have most frequently painted European scenery, particularly in France, he has also produced many scenic paintings, and paintings of objects, in his homeland, Taiwan. Despite Chang's fascination with the beauty of Paris, he does not seek to glorify the city by painting beautiful tourist attractions. Instead, his Parisian street views feature people in humble conditions.

Chang's paintings are often concerned with the lives of ordinary people, city scenery, everyday life, and minorities in modern society, and each is shown with his unique artistry and profound depth. His artistic expression might be explored through an application of contemporary aesthetic theories, as well as cultural studies concepts, to enrich and expand our understanding of Chang's creative achievements.
