以四個案例美術館論設計類展覽與其背後的意義

摘要

本研究主要探討當代美術館辦理設計類展覽的現象,及展覽背後與設計類收藏的互動關係,試圖了解當代美術館對設計抱持的理解與接收度,透過展覽呈現出的設計面貌以及背後的可能意義。因此選擇三個國際案例以及一個臺灣案例,做為研究分析的對象。案例分別是荷蘭的阿姆斯特丹市立博物館、美國的舊金山現代美術館、日本的東京都現代美術館以及臺灣的臺北市立美術館。案例採用資料分析法,透過不同地區的美術館,以十年(2002至2011年)為一個研究區間與研究範圍,分析美術館中設計類展覽與設計類收藏的狀況,進而了解相互之間的關係及可能的影響因素。

研究發現博物館展覽是美術館或博物館與觀眾之間最直接的溝通管道,也是館方溝通體系中非常重要的一環。展覽內容本身會傳達給觀眾有關美術館經營的印象,而展覽與館藏之間存在有高度互動關係,而這互動關係又會回饋到展覽意義的表現。博物館的展覽策略與操作也會受到其他內部措施或觀念的影響,如館長的經營策略、館務發展的定位、與在地相關社群的互動、對藝術範疇的理解與接受度等。最後建議北美館未來在經營設計類展覽與設計類收藏的同時,應該思考逐步擴大對藝術範疇的接 受度。增加對應臺灣設計內容的展覽與研究,也是協助臺灣逐步落實設計物件與設計文化的研究。

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to investigate the phenomenon of design exhibitions organized by contemporary art museums and the relationships between these exhibitions and museums' design collections. This study is an attempt to comprehend contemporary art museums' scope of knowledge on design, the degree to which they accept design, how design is presented in exhibitions, and factors which have possibly given rise to these exhibitions. Research has been conducted on exhibitions at four museums, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

Utilizing methods of data analysis to compare these various museums, the parameters of this research are focused on the decade from 2002 to 2011 and include analyses of the conditions of design exhibitions and design collections at these museums. The paper thus attempts to reach an understanding of various relationships and possible influencing factors within these institutions.

This research has discovered that exhibitions are the most direct channel of communication between a museum and its audience and are a pivotal part of any museum's system of communication. Furthermore, there is a high level of interconnection between exhibitions and collections. Such relationships also relate to how exhibitions are conceived and organized. Exhibition strategies and museum management can be influenced by other internal ideas and practices, such as: the museum director's strategy; the way a museum positions itself; a museums' relationship with its surrounding community; the scope of understanding and acceptance for art, and other issues. Lastly, a proposal is made for the Taipei Fine Arts Museum: in the future, as the museum makes plans for design exhibitions or adds design works to its collections, it should gradually expand the breadth of its coverage. With the increasing number of exhibitions and research into design in Taiwan, this could assist Taiwan in progressively bringing more design pieces into Taiwanese museums and implementing studies on the culture of design.
