摘要
在一般愛好早期歐洲現代美術的人們心目中，梵谷的繪畫可以說是最受眾人喜愛，特別是他的傳奇性生涯，令人感動不已。然而，正因為從梵谷同時代就已經開始，評論家們便過分側重這個傳奇式不幸藝術家的瘋狂靈魂的渲染，使得我們幾乎在一開始的時候，便誤入歧途，對於梵谷的真正藝術成就的欣賞，反而所知較少。
本研究在於透過對於梵谷書信內容的仔細分析，來證明他的頭腦其實是多麼的清晰，尤其是他個人對於色彩的理論及應用是有著多麼令人欽佩的獨到見地。

Abstract
For lovers of early modem European art, Vincent van Gogh's painting is most appealing. This is more so because the artist has led a tragic life that becomes almost legendary. Ironically, we find the popular and yet superficial emphasis on the artist's life seems to debase his achievement instead of appreciate it. The present study propose to emphasize more on the artist's seriousness in his artistic effort through the study of his numerous letters with contemporary people. The result shows that indeed the artist had a very deep understanding of color and had an amazing ability of self-observation that deserves our respect.
